Liverpool nicked the goal their performance had merited just after the hour mark, Roberto Firmino providing a sumptuous assist for Mohamed Salah, who guided the ball home for his 17th in the Premier League already in 2020/21.
So far, so good.
...And then seven of the most chaotic minutes that you could ever wish to see unfolded.
Even Leicester's equaliser was confusing. Harvey Barnes was fouled right on the edge of the box, fell into the box, and a penalty shout was reviewed, with VAR eventually deeming it to be a free kick instead. No matter, James Maddison fired home. This was disallowed for offside because Daniel Amartey was interfering with play... But was he actually interfering with play? Turns out it didn't matter as VAR discovered that he wasn't actually offside. Maybe?
Just three minutes later, Youri Tielemans' hopeful long ball caused mayhem in the Liverpool backline, Ozan Kabak preparing to clear the ball before Alisson - keen to make amends for his mishaps against City last time out - came rushing from his goal in an attempt to do the debutant's work for him.
This did not quite go to plan, the pair both missed the ball and Jamie Vardy was on hand to capitalise and stroke into an empty net.
Liverpool's backline was then left wanting four minutes later, the lively Barnes the beneficiary as he raced clean through and slotted cooly past Alisson.
Liverpool had been comfortably leading and within seven minutes they had completely collapsed - and the good folk of Twitter were left to attempt to comprehend what on earth they had just witnessed.
And so the finger pointing and the blaming began, with new boy Kabak and summer recruit Thiago Alcantara two of social media's scapegoats for the collapse.

Yet, by the time that Aston Villa's seventh (yes, seventh) goal went in against Liverpool, it was already abundantly clear we were witnessing one of the Premier League's all time great games.
A truly remarkable contest kicked into life inside five minutes when Adrian reminded everyone that he is definitely, 100% NOT Alisson, producing an absolute clanger that gifted Ollie Watkins the game's opening goal.
Villa then doubled their lead with Watkins once again getting on the scoresheet.
While his first came with an asterisk thanks to Adrian's horrific blunder, this one was pure inspiration. Cutting in from the left, the former Brentford man unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner.
Mo Salah's powerful strike from inside the box offered some brief respite from Dean Smith's sexy football show - but not for long.
Soon after Salah scored, John McGinn restored Villa's two goal advantage via a deflected volley from the edge of the box.
Then it came. The moment Watkins will have been dreaming of ever since he signed for Villa in the summer - his first Premier League hat trick.
It came via a huge helping hand from the Liverpool defence, who for some reason decided to hold their defensive line about three yards away from Villa's free kick taker. This bizarrely high line allowed Trezeguet all the time in the world to pick out Watkins, who made no mistake with his head.

After the break the brilliant social media content just kept on coming.
Just 10 minutes in, boyhood Everton fan Ross Barkley marked his Villa debut with a goal when his long range strike deflected past Adrian.

Again Salah tried to stop the party and again, he failed. This time, Jack Grealish added his mark on the game, firing ANOTHER defected shot past Adrian.

Things didn't end there either. Grealish then bagged again to make 7-2. A truly bonkers evening.
After the full time whistle was blown, the post-mortem began in earnest.
The overwhelming feeling was one of utter disbelief. This was Liverpool, the seemingly unbeatable Premier League champions being put to the sword by a side nearly everyone tipped for relegation at the start of the season.
